Education

Whether you are looking to boost your qualifications or access research partners, the region has much to offer with Universities. There are five world class Universities including two in the Russell Group: Durham University, Newcastle University, Northumbria University, University of Sunderland and Teesside University.

There is also a great choice for school education, with many outstanding and good performing state and independent schools throughout the North East.

North East Economy

There is a renaissance in the North East economy as it is capturing many of the opportunities that are arising with new and emerging markets. The businesses in the advanced material electronics sector is playing a major part in this, but other closely aligned sectors too in space, resilient communication and computer games development.

The North East is reaping the benefits of the low carbon economy. Already home the UK’s first offshore windfarm, it will now also be home to world’s largest offshore wind farm, with many renewable energy businesses expanding their operations here. Major investments are also being made in carbon capture storage and to support the hydrogen economy.

The region is also establishing itself as a major area for the electrification of transport. Nissan which has been part of the North East for decades is committed to the manufacturing of electric cars, and this is coupled with the development of two battery gigafactories in the region. Hitachi Rail has also been awarded to manufacture the electric trains to deliver on a highly lucrative £2bn HS2 contract.

The cities in the North East are also now hubs for some of the fastest growing digital technology businesses such as SAGE, Atom Bank and Tombola. Fintech, gaming and immersive technology sectors are gaining a great reputation nationally and beyond.

The North East is probably the second largest home to the process industry in the UK. This is generating many innovations in advanced materials and biotechnology.
